The Flora dance performance is the place for all those who enjoy experimental dance in an exceptional setting: Italian dancer and choreographer Matteo Carvone presents his programme, created especially for the Flower Power Festival, in the former industrial hall in Gasteig HP8.

The piece is a choreographic exploration of the world of plants as a form of hidden reality that we can’t see, or usually ignore. An exploration of the perception of time, space and interactions that separate us from the language of vegetal species. A journey into hidden underground spaces where human hierarchies and values are liquefied and where different possible forms of communication and relations can be learned.

What can plants teach us about ourselves? Are plants intelligent or are they just reacting to stimuli? Are we humans really intelligent or do we just react to stimuli as well?

The sound architecture of Flora

Sounds were collected in the Munich botanical garden, from the meditative acoustics of the greenhouses, to the intimate textures of plant leaves, and the voices of botanists working at the garden. Inspired by extensive discussions with researchers about flora’s ability to perceive sounds, communicate with other plants and collaborate with other species, botanical data expressing the complex world of plants were collected as material for composition. Through a process of sonification, data ranging from plant movements, bio-signals, to genetic material were translated into musical structures. Weaving together these meditative recordings, scientific discussions and data-driven scores, the sounds of Flora emerged from a biomimetic process where plants were invited to take part in designing the architecture of the piece.
